“LAMA Premieres with a Bang and Scholarships for Future Filmmakers!”
In a stunning display of talent and ambition, the anticipated film LAMA made its grand debut at the Cinemax Cinema Arena Mall on Good Friday, April 18, 2025. The premiere was not just a celebration of cinematic creativity but also an inspiration of hope for aspiring filmmakers, as Nkambo Robert director of Mediavision Academy announced five scholarships aimed at nurturing the next generation of Ugandan filmmakers.
The atmosphere was electric as attendees were treated to a breathtaking Kiganda dance performance, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening. Guests mingled and snapped photos with students from Mediavision Academy, all while enjoying tasty bites and the vibrant sounds of live music. As the lights dimmed and the audience settled into the largest auditorium, excitement filled the air, signalling the start of a cinematic journey that would captivate hearts and minds.
LAMA tells the touching story of Christine, a 19-year-old aspiring musician portrayed by the talented Shamara Nakafeero. Christine’s dream hangs in the balance when her father unexpectedly falls in love with her, creating a complex web of emotions that resonates deeply with viewers. The film’s gripping narrative kept the audience glued to their seats, with many expressing their admiration for the cast and crew during the post-screening applause.
Director Ediego Joseph Innocent shared his thoughts with Mediavision Academy, praising the enthusiasm and dedication of the largely novice team behind LAMA. “This film’s success is a testament to the power of collaboration,” he stated, advising fellow filmmakers to build their social capital and work together to elevate the Ugandan film industry. Innocent also expressed gratitude to Mediavision Academy for the scholarships, emphasizing that the knowledge gained will pave the way for even more ambitious projects in the future.
Producer Shamirah Nakafeero, who also starred in the lead role, was overwhelmed by the turnout. “I never expected this,” she exclaimed, thanking everyone who supported their big day. Inspired by a true story, Nakafeero aimed to shed light on mental health issues through her work. She openly acknowledged the challenges of producing in Uganda, highlighting the need for collaboration and support among filmmakers to foster growth in the industry. “The making of LAMA showed me the power of teamwork,” she noted, reflecting on the solidarity that blossomed during production.
The film has already garnered three nominations at the Uganda Film Festival for Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Indigenous Language, leaving Nakafeero humbled by the recognition. Following the premiere, the team is gearing up for a widespread screening in local cinemas, eager to share their story with audiences far and wide.
As the credits rolled and the audience erupted in cheers, it was clear that LAMA is not just a film; it’s a movement. A movement that champions collaboration, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of dreams in the vibrant world of Ugandan cinema. With the promise of more screenings and the potential for future projects, the legacy of LAMA is just beginning.
