Mediavision Academy Honors Northern Uganda Film Awards in Gulu City
On April 26, 2025, Mediavision Academy joined filmmakers in Gulu City for the inaugural Northern Uganda Film Awards (NUFA). The event, held at Acholi Inn, was a lively celebration that attracted a full house of enthusiastic attendees.
Two delegates from Mediavision Academy had the honor of presenting awards in two categories. Annet Aloyo, the Director of Studies, awarded the Best Makeup Artist award to Nimaro Precious for her work in the film “One Last Puff.” Nkambo Robert, the founder and director of the Academy, presented the Best Female Actor in a Feature Film award to Hon. Lucica Roes for her role in “Tears of Akello.”

A total of 16 awards were given to talented filmmakers from four subregions: West Nile, Karamoja, Lango, and Acholi. The event was attended by dignitaries from various sectors, including politics, academia, and business.
The guest of honor, Hon. Betty Amongi Akena, the Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, praised the participants for their remarkable talent. She expressed her happiness at seeing young people creating jobs for themselves and others, stating, “I want to see films from Northern Uganda in Hollywood.” She also announced that the government plans to develop an online application to combat film piracy and has allocated 3 billion Uganda shillings for film production for all regions across the country, available to filmmakers as loans at a 6% interest rate. Hon. Amongi contributed 5 million Uganda shillings to support the festival.

Ambassador Olara Otunnu encouraged filmmakers to participate in the “Roco Paco” initiative, which aims to restore the cultural identity of Northern Uganda lost during years of conflict. He urged filmmakers to create authentic content that reflects their heritage and culture, rather than imitating other film industries.

Notable guests included Gulu City Mayor Okwonga Alfred, Hon. Ojok Andrew Oulanyah, MP of Omoro County RCC of Gulu City, Mr. Onaria Ambrose, Sylvia Awori Director of Wealth Creation, and Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum Deputy Vice Chancellor of Lira University.
Ojok Odong, the founder of the Northern Uganda Film Awards, emphasized that the awards aim to celebrate and promote exceptional films and filmmakers while attracting investment to the Northern Uganda region.
