Top winners to get cash Awards: 11th edition of PIFF launched at the National Theatre

Pearl International Film Festival (PIFF) makes grand comeback, marking its 11th edition with a series of exciting events and the introduction of cash awards. The festival’s revival is made even more special with Mediavision Academy joining PIFF at its launch, today 5th of October, 2024 at the National Theatre Green Room.

PIFF producer Ashman Mulima unveiled the nomination lists, setting the stage for a celebration of diverse talents that make up the African film landscape. With over 20 categories ranging from Best Production Design to Best Animation and Best Documentary, the competition is fierce, and the stakes are higher than ever with the addition of a cash award for both Best Feature Film and Best Director.

The nominees represent a wide range of storytelling in the region. ‘Ssekukulu‘ from Sharon Ishmwe and Gerard Namanya leads the pack with 13 nominations, closely followed by ‘Soccer Heart’ by Kevin Johns Nabukenya  with 11 nominations. Other contenders include ‘Beautiful Ashes’ by Ayeny T. Steven, ‘Lions of Buganda’ by Jerry Sesanga, and ‘Kitara Chronicles‘ by Yiga Sadat, each telling unique stories that resonate with audiences in Uganda and beyond.

Organizers also announced a series of film workshops to be conducted nationwide. These workshops will empower participants with practical skills in various aspects of filmmaking, from screenwriting and cinematography to acting and film editing. The knowledge gained will be showcased in short films, providing a platform for emerging talents to apply their skills in a real-world setting.

According to Ashman, film screenings have been scheduled kick off on the 19th ending 21st of November 2024 at Cinemax Cinema, located at Ham Shopping Mall opposite Makerere University. This will be an opportunity to experience the magic of cinema and appreciate the artistry of filmmakers from Uganda,  Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, Cameroon and Nigeria.

This year’s panel of judges comprises of industry veterans such as Dr. Cindy Magara, Marriam Ndagire, and Lucky Lora Atwiine. Their sharp eyes will assess the entries, ensuring that the winners represent the pinnacle of cinematic excellence in Africa.

Mediavision Academy, a long-standing partner of PIFF, extends its heartfelt congratulations to the festival director for running the festival for over a decade and maintaining its consistency. The academy also commends all filmmakers who submitted their works and expresses its eagerness to join in the festivities for the eventual winners at the grand award night slated for the 23rd of November, 2024.
